Diabetic Foot Ulcer – HEBERPROT-P
Heberprot-P is a drug developed by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) in Cubah for the treatment of severe diabetic foot ulcer which has epidermal growth factor (EGF) as it’s the main ingredient and is parenteral administered (intra-lesional injections directly in the wound). About 160,000 diabetic foot ulcer patients have been treated with Heberprot-P with success reducing the risk of amputation by 75%.
Diabetic patients have a decreased amount of growth factor concentrations, mainly epidermal growth factor receptor (EGF). EGF is an important growth factor that promotes cell growth and cell proliferation by binding to the epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFR). A reduced amount of EGF impairs wound healing to such extremes as to may require amputation. Heberprot-Pencourages healing in a progressive and sustained manner.
Heberprot-P is given for treatment for patients suffering chronic nonhealing wounds with poor prognosis and those not responding to extensive conventional methods of treatment.
